Mural for the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center

The Town of Fuquay-Varina is currently accepting proposals from artists interested in creating a public mural in downtown Fuquay-Varina. This mural project is undertaken in conjunction with construction of the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center, scheduled to be completed in late Spring, 2018.

The Arts Center is a combination renovation/new construction project in downtown Fuquay-Varina, designed by Szostak Design, Inc.  When completed, the Arts Center will house an art gallery, 4 large classrooms, a paint studio, digital art studio, dance studio, administrative suite, and a 300-seat theatre.

Proposals will be reviewed by a mural panel comprised of representative(s) of the Downtown Business Collaborative, the Fuquay-Varina Arts Council, and Downtown Revitalization Association, which will make recommendations to Town Management and Town Council.

Project Goals
The Goals of the public art project are:
1.Beautify public areas in downtown which attract heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
2.Visually promote the benefit of the arts throughout the Town of Fuquay-Varina and Wake County.
3.Use art as a landmark to visually connect visitors to public spaces.

About the Project
•The project budget is $25,000 for one mural by an artist or team of collaborative artists.
•The project budget includes the artist(s) fee, surface preparation (if needed), mural protection/maintenance plan, supplies, travel-related expenses and other associated costs.
•The artist will be required to apply a protective coating once the mural is completed. The medium used must be durable and able to withstand minor wear and tear and harsh outdoor elements for at least five years.
•The Town strongly prefers a mural design that celebrates the history of Fuquay-Varina.
•The mural will serve as a visual landmark and should be distinctive in its design and use of color. Only original art will be considered.
•The design will be suitable and acceptable for public viewing of all ages.
•Location for the Arts Center 123 East Vance Street; the mural location is the east side of the building, facing South Fuquay Avenue.
•The available surface space is @1,200 square feet (12’ high X 100’ long).
•Artists are invited to incorporate an opportunity for the public to take part in painting a portion of the mural.
•Preference will be given to North Carolina artists.
•Since the mural wall is part of the Arts Center renovation project, conversation between the selected artist and the GC will be necessary to coordinate scheduling.
•Paint and other supplies, as possible, are to be purchased from local vendors.
•Target date for completion of the mural is May 18, 2018; the time available to install the mural will be dependent upon the overall project schedule, and may take place earlier than mid-May, should construction allow.

Artists interested in creating a work of public art should submit the following materials by Sunday, December 31, 2017:
1. A narrative of the concept for the mural, including supplemental information such as medium, and approximate dimensions of the proposed mural. The narrative should convey the artistic content, colors, style of work, etc.
2. 11X17 drawing illustration of the proposed mural
3. Itemized budget
4. Timetable (the mural is to be completed in Spring, 2018, on or around May 18, 2018)
5. Wall preparation plan
6. Mural protection/maintenance plan
7. Resume, contact information, and an artist statement
8. Support material such as examples of other works and/or reviews of similar work. Examples should describe size, materials, cost and location of other public works.
