Construction at the intersection of Main/Judd/Broad is set to begin Jan. 22. How will it affect your commute?
Construction on the NE Judd Parkway Intersection Project (Judd/Main/Broad) will begin on Jan. 22, 2018. Planning for the project began immediately following citizen approval of the 2015 Transportation Bond and will expand the Judd/Main/Broad intersection by adding lanes on NE Judd Parkway from Old Honeycutt Road past the Walmart shopping center. With design, right-of-way acquisition and government approvals complete, the Town begins the 18-month project which is expected to increase traffic flow and efficiency at one of Fuquay-Varina’s most congested intersections. The Fred Smith Company is the contractor for the project. The total project budget is over $7 million and is funded through a combination of bonds and grants.
Working from the outside to the middle, the contractor will widen the road, add lanes and widen the area around the railroad tracks by approximately 12 feet on each side. The project is complicated by the relocation of numerous utilities.
As we undertake the construction project at the NE Judd Parkway Intersection, town officials will endeavor to provide as much information about the project as possible. We will work with the contractor to update project information every Friday, so the public will know in advance what to expect in the upcoming week. Find traffic updates at www.fuquay-varina.org/trafficupdates or on the Town’s Facebook page.
The best advice we can give is to make sure you pre-plan access to the Judd/Main/Broad and familiarize yourself with alternative routes. Pinch points will be at rush hour, the end of the school day and on Saturday. Plan for delays at the NE Judd Parkway Intersection and surrounding area. Various traffic control measures will be utilized at different phases of the project. These may include partial or full lane closures, detours and night work. Please stay alert and drive safely in the work zone.
At the end of the project, the Town will have an improved intersection with more lanes and better traffic flow. During construction, traffic is likely to get worse before it gets better.
Here’s some information that will help as the intersection projects gets underway:
