2017 Town Accomplishments

Year in Review

Fuquay-Varina is in a strong period of growth. The Triangle Metro Area remains one of the fastest growing in the country and Fuquay-Varina has become one of the fastest growing towns in the state.  That growth is fueling economic development bringing retail and housing opportunities as well as good job prospects for citizens. The past year has been a busy one for Town government managing the opportunities and challenges created by transformational growth.  Here are a few highlights from 2017.

  • The intersection at Main/Sunset Lake/Purfoy began improvements with the addition of lanes and signalization in Dec. and will be completed in early 2018.
  • With design, ROW acquisition and mandated approvals completed in 2017, the intersection at Judd/Main/Broad began construction last month. This $7,057,000 project will take one-year to complete and improve traffic flow at one of Fuquay-Varina’s most congested intersections.
  • Design and right-of-way acquisition has continued allowing for construction on the final leg of Judd Parkway to begin in mid-2018 and open in 2020.
  • In March, construction began on the Fuquay-Varina Arts Center, a 300+ seat theater located in downtown.  When complete this spring, it will provide creative arts programming to fill an increased demand by citizens for arts programming.
  • Construction on the $34 million Terrible Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant is 85% complete and expected to open this spring.  Tripling the treatment capacity helps the town to meet the demands created by growth.
  • Town Hall will return to downtown Fuquay-Varina in early 2019 with the approved purchase by the town board of the Bob Barker Company headquarters. The Police Depart. will relocate to the current Town Hall on Old Honeycutt Rd.  These changes are being made to accommodate a growing staff to meet the needs of citizens.
  • The Town has embarked on a transformational $40 million mixed-use project in the downtown Fuquay District along Main St. & E. Academy St. that will include up to 250 new market rate apartments, 25,000 SF of new retail space and a new parking structure. Armada Hoffler Properties will develop the mixed-use project in concert with the Town’s vision.
  • Wake County began construction on Willow Spring High School.  The new 350,000 SF state of the art facility will accommodate 2,350 students and is set to open Aug. 2019.  Preliminary planning for South Lakes Elementary School got underway with a tentative opening in 2020.
  • Wake County approved a schematic design for the new Fuquay-Varina library.  The 9,500 SF facility will more than double the library’s size and triple the book capacity when it moves to a new central location on Judd Parkway. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2018.
  • Over the past year, the Town completed comprehensive planning for the future and the Town Board adopted the 2035 Community Land Use Plan and the 2035 Community Transportation Plan as well as rolled out a new Land Development Ordinance.
  • Master facilities planning began with a final recommendation due to the Town Board this year.  The plan ensures adequate parks and facilities to meet citizen demand now and in the future.
  • The Fire Depart. completed a routine inspection by the NCDOI and received an upgraded protection rating to Class 2 (previously 4) within Town Limits resulting in lower insurance premiums for commercial occupancies covered by the Public Protection Classification System. The improvement from a Class 9 to a Class 4 in the rural district will result in insurance premium benefits for both residences and businesses.
  • The animated State of the Town video won both national and state awards for excellence in communications.  More importantly, the video has been viewed by more than 22,000 people.

Look for an updated State of the Town video with 2017 highlights to be presented by Mayor John W. Byrne at the State of the Town address on Tues., Mar. 20th at 6:30 pm.  Better yet, make plans to join that night!
