Gyotaku

Gyotaku, the art of fish printing. June 24th 3-7PM at the Fuquay-Varina Art Center

Gyotaku (gyo "fish" + taku "stone impression") is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice that dates back to the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches but has also become an art form of its own. It is done on rice paper and produces beautiful prints of scales and patterns from the fish used. The instructors, will teach students how to pin a gutted fish into styrofoam, how to apply links, how to print the fish, and how to finish painting the eye and other details. Students will also learn how to print a school of fish, a "ghost print" and more. All materials provided. There will be a break after the first two hours. Parents can bring a child to participate for an additional $25. Class meets on June 24th from 3:00pm-7:00pm for ages 15+
