[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Information

All town government will open at 12 pm on THUR., JAN. 18.  Garbage collection will run as usual.

Here are some useful tips when we have winter weather issues such as snow and ice.

Help us to help you! Please don't park cars on the streets. This allows us to clear the roads easily and safely. The Town priorities for clearing ice/snow include major bridges, Hwy. 401, Hwy. 55, Hwy. 42, Judd Parkway and major routes through town followed by primary roads, then secondary roads. After these priorities are met, the Town will begin clearing main roads in subdivisions. The Town does not treat or clear parking lots or private roads.

Power Outages

If you experience power outages, contact Duke Progress Energy at 1-800-419-6356.

Report Outage Online

If you see a down power line or tree on a power line, assume it is live and please stay away. Call Duke Energy Progress at 1-800-419-6356 as well as your local law enforcement at 919-552-3191 for these types of safety hazards.

Water Issues or Emergencies

Cold weather and freezing temperatures create a stress on water infrastructure, increasing the chance of leaks and needed repairs. The Town of Fuquay-Varina maintains all water mains and laterals located in the public rights of way. When pipes break between the water meter and the home or within the home, the customer is responsible for repairs.  If you have an after-hours water emergency, please call 919-552-3178.  For water emergencies during regular business hours, call 919-753-1028.

Tips before you drive your vehicle on ice and snow:

  • Avoid travel unless necessary when winter weather is in your area.
  • If you must travel, leave early and allow more travel time; expect delays.
  • Clear all windows of your vehicle prior to travel as having unobstructed vision is vital to avoid running off the road or having a collision.
  • Illuminate your vehicle's headlamps.
Decrease speed, increase following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and wear your seat belt.
  • Use caution on bridges and overpasses as they are susceptible to freezing before roadways.
  • Avoid using cruise control. Cruise can cause the vehicle's wheels to continue turning on a slippery surface when speed needs to be decreased.
  • Avoid driving while fatigued or distracted.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Never leave your vehicle unlocked and unattended with the engine running.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • Ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and is prepared to be driven on ice and snow. Check your battery, lights, brake system, tires, heating system, etc.
  • Charge your cell phone prior to departure.
  • Items suggested for a "winter driving kit" include an ice scraper, cloth or paper towels, booster cables, blanket, warning flares or triangles, cell phone, gloves, window washing solvent, snow brush, flashlight, and a bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt or cat litter, or traction mats.
  • Notify a family member or friend of your travel plans prior to your departure.

Automobile Accidents Due To Weather

To report an accident in Fuquay-Varina, call 919-552-3191.

Be patient! If you are involved in a collision or other vehicle related issue while traveling, understand weather limits law enforcement capabilities and response time. Keep in mind that all law enforcement agencies experience a higher volume of requests for service.

If possible, attempt to move your vehicle out of the roadway if you are involved in a minor, non-injury traffic collision, especially if you are in a dangerous curve or blind hill. If your vehicle is stranded or wrecked but not in roadway, attempts to recover your vehicle will be delayed until conditions improve for safety considerations, especially when outside of municipal areas where state or county response applies.
