1. What can I recycle?

Only the following items should be placed in your recycle cart: metal cans, flattened cardboard, plastics (water, soda, juice and cleaning bottles, and plastic jugs) glass bottles, cartons and paper. If you are unsure an item belongs in the recycle cart, please place it in the garbage cart.

Place recycled items directly into your blue recycle cart. DO NOT place recycle material in a plastic bag of any kind. The Town of Fuquay-Varina will not empty blue recycling bins if materials are placed in a plastic bag of any kind or contain non-recyclable material.

2. What day is my recycling collected?

Recycling is picked up every other Wednesday and is based on where you live. Find out if you are assigned to the Blue or Green Route. Cross reference the  Green and Blue Recycling Calendar to determine your exact recycling collection date.

3. Why didn’t my recycling bin get emptied?

Recyclable material must be placed directly in the recycle cart and not in a bag.

When non-recyclables contaminate the recycling load, it has the potential to turn the entire recycle load into trash which increases the cost to process the load. Ultimately, this can mean higher costs to our customers.

When our staff sees items that are non-recyclable in a recycle cart, they will leave the items behind, or they may leave the entire cart.

4. What day is my garbage collection?

Find your scheduled garbage collection day with our interactive map. When the map loads, expand the Town Information and Development layer group and turn on the Garbage Pickup Streets layer.

5. What items are not collected in a regular garbage container by the town?

The following items cannot be placed in the garbage cart:

Treated wood, recyclables, yard waste, liquids, dirt, masonry, rock, metal, wood, building materials, ashes, loose diapers, animal waste, contractor waste, fluorescent light tubes, electronic waste, or hazardous waste.  Please consult with Wake County Solid Waste Management to determine the correct disposal of these items.

6. How will the holiday affect my garbage collection?

There are only two holidays each year that affect trash/recycling collection. Trash/recycling is not collected on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. On all other holidays, residents can expect to have their trash/recycling collected on their normal service day. If a holiday falls on Monday, bulky items and appliance pick-up will be on Tuesday.

7. What’s the difference between yard debris service and loose leaf service?

	Loose leaves	Yard debris
Description	Leaves and pine straw. No limbs, rocks, trash, etc.	Vegetative material (grass clippings, pulled weeds, branches, and other debris). No dirt, mulch, sod, or rocks.
Collection schedule	Automatically collected mid-October to mid-February. No request needed. Collected the same week as recycling. Leaves should be prepared by Sunday of recycling week.	Collected year-round, by request (complete the yard debris form). All requests for pick-up received by 5:00 p.m. on Monday will be scheduled for pick up that week.
Preparation	Place loose leaf and/or pine straw piles at the curb in one large pile. Do not place leaves in the street where they may interfere with traffic or drainage. Do not block sidewalks or fire hydrants. Leaves cannot be in containers or on tarps.	Place all loose residential yard debris (grass clippings, pulled weeds, and small pruning branches) in one or more plastic totes (less than 20 gallons). Larger debris, such as limbs, must be stacked in one large pile. Limbs should not be longer than 5 feet in length and 5 inches in diameter. Do not place on a tarp.

8. How do I dispose of large items?

Complete the bulky item request form by Friday by 5 p.m. for pick-up on Monday. There is no fee for this residential customer service. The town does not collect construction materials, treated wood, pallets, or hazardous waste materials.

Cardboard is not collected in bulky item pickups. Please remove all packing material, break down the cardboard, and place it in the recycling bin.

9. Does the town pick-up appliances?

Yes. Complete the Appliance Pick-up Request Form and pay a $10 appliance fee at the Finance Office located in the John W. Byrne Municipal Building at 134 N. Main Street. You may also pay at the drive-up window located across the street from the Municipal Building. Once the fee is paid and pick-up is scheduled, the appliance will be picked up on Monday. To ensure pick-up, both the request and fee must be made by Friday at 5 p.m.

10. How do I dispose of electronics?

Citizens can dispose of televisions, computers, monitors, scanners, printers, and other electronic waste for free at the Electronic Recycling Convenience Center located at 900 S. Main Street behind the Community Center and is open 24 hours per day.

Curbside pick-up of electronic waste is available for a $10 fee. Pickup MUST be scheduled and paid for by Friday at 5 p.m. at the Finance Office located in John W. Byrne Municipal Building at 134 N. Main Street. You may also pay at the drive-up window located across the street from the Municipal Building.

Pick-up is on Monday unless otherwise noted.

11. How do I dispose of household hazardous waste?

The Town of Fuquay-Varina does not dispose of household hazardous waste. Wake County provides several facilities. Find information, details about acceptable/unacceptable items, etc. here: Hazardous Waste Facilities.
